WHY CHOOSE DUST CAPS AND SHIMS?

The most effective and precise way to fix your speaker is with the DELUXE KIT. When you order the Deluxe Kit you receive 2 foam rings, one bottle of special speaker adhesive, a packet of alignment shims, 2 dust caps, written instructions, and an INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO TAPE.
Another point that many customers bring up is that their dust caps are fine. This is wonderful news, but true to its name, the dust cap simply prevents dust and debris from getting into that gap shown above. Cutting this cap away is merely a stepping-stone in the repair process. When your repair is all finished you would glue on larger replacement dust caps to cover up your work area. The great thing is that the videotape that comes with the kit guides you right through this entire process and makes the repair effortless. The difference in price between a Deluxe and Standard kit is only $5 and it is well worth the time and money to get your speakers fixed correctly the first time around!
Some people now ask what is the Standard Kit for ? Well, there are several reasons for the Standard Kit. One major reason is for people who have speaker cabinets with passive radiators. These do not have voice coils and therefore a Deluxe Kit is not needed. Some people are also highly experienced and prefer not to cut off the dust cap and center the voice coil, so we try to cater to their needs. There are a few other special circumstances as well. Why choose dust caps and shims? The answer is simple, because the Deluxe Kit with all of its components allows you to mechanically center the voice coil around the magnetic pole piece. As you can see in the picture, the voice coil and pole piece are machined very closely and need a consistent gap between them. Some what like a piston in a motor vehicle engine. It is by inserting alignment shims at the 12, 4 and 8 o'clock positions that you keep this gap centered, preventing rubbing from occurring when the NEWFOAM is glued back into place. Without these shims you run a much higher risk of being off center. If you have a speaker with very tight tolerances this could mean failure and having to do the repair over again. We call this the PRO KIT because we use this method with almost every speaker that we fix in house. If we use it, why wouldn't you?
